North Central Washington is home to many bodies of water and they all play their part in helping the region be all that it can be. Billy Clapp Lake is located in the eastern part of the region and is popular with locals and those visitors from outside the region who are “in the know”. It’s an important part of the Columbia Basin’s irrigation plan, even though it can fly a bit under the radar with most people.
Here are five fun facts about Billy Clapp Lake.
Original Name
The original name of what is now Billy Clapp Lake was Long Lake Reservoir.
Honoring Mr. Clapp
The reservoir was renamed Billy Clapp Lake to honor one of the originators of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project.
Not Natural
Billy Clapp Lake was originally an empty coulee that had been carved during the Great Missoula Flood. The lake formed when the Pinto Dam was built at the six mile long coulee’s southern end.
Summer Falls
Billy Clapp Lake is formed from water from the Main Canal, which is part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, and brings water from Banks Lake. It empties into Billy Clapp Lake via Summer Falls.
Birthdate
Billy Clapp Lake was filled in 1948 with the completion of Pinto Dam.
